Child Find Services

Child Find is the process of identifying and evaluating children, birth to age 21, who may have special needs.  At Cañon School, we conduct screenings and evaluations for children with developmental concerns.  Our team may consist of an early childhood special educator, speech pathologist, school psychologist, occupational therapist, physical therapist, audiologist or school nurse.  Developmental evaluations are completed to determine eligibility for special education and early intervention services.

For children birth to age three the Child Find process is completed in collaboration with The Resource Exchange (TRE).  The Child Find process for this age group typically begins with a parent or physician referral regarding a developmental delay.  If the child is found eligible for services, an Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP) will be created and services will be provided through The Resource Exchange.  For more information, or to complete a referral, please contact TRE at 719-785-3732.

Cheyenne Mountain School District provides free screenings for families with concerns for their child's development who are 3- to 5-years of age.  Concerns may be in the areas of motor, speech, hearing, vision,  academic/cognitive, or social/emotional.  After the screening is completed, the Child Find Coordinator or another team member will determine if an evaluation is needed to determine eligibility for special education services. To schedule a screening call 475-6140.

For children 3-to-5 years of age, the Child Find process is conducted at Cañon School.  A full and individualized evaluation is completed to determine if a child is eligible for special education services.  If a child is found eligible, services are provided within our integrated early childhood preschool program.  Eligibility for special education is based on the impact of your child accessing the general education curriculum.

If you have concerns about your child’s ability to learn, play, communicate, interact, hear, see or move, you are encouraged to call (475-6140) or email our Early Childhood Coordinator.
